Ocean Sciences in Canada – November 6, 2013

Canada is bordered by three oceans and boasts more coastline than any other country. Oceans have shaped our history and our economy, but do we have the tools we need to address current and future issues in ocean science research in an era of unprecedented change? Can we maintain our world-leading position in this important field? Those are the questions asked by Ocean Science in Canada: Meeting the Challenge, Seizing the Opportunity a new report soon to be released by the Council of Canadian Academies.

The Science Media Centre of Canada (SMCC) hosted a briefing on November 6, 2013 the date of the report’s release:

  • How does Canada rank in the world in terms of ocean science research?

  • How can current and future technologies improve our knowledge of the three oceans?

  • What existing research and infrastructure gaps will challenge Canada to be a global leader in ocean science?

  • How can we best leverage the scientific expertise that we have in government, academia and the private sector?

Two of the members of the expert panel presented their findings and answered questions:

David Strangway, Former president and CEO, Canada Foundation for Innovation; Former President and Vice-Chancellor, University of British Columbia

Louis Fortier, Professor, Department of Biology, Université Laval, Canada Research Chair on the Response of Arctic Marine Ecosystems to Climate Change
