IPCC 5th Assessment, Working Group I – The Physical Science of Climate Change – September 27, 2013

The summary for policy makers from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released on Friday September 27 morning at a meeting in Stockholm. In it, scientists present the latest assessment on the science of global climate change. For more information, click here to read our backgrounder on the IPCC.

The same day, the SMCC held a webinar to answer the following questions:

  • How much have human activities contributed to climate change?

  • Why is the rate of sea level rise accelerating?

  • What’s happening to the world’s ice sheets?

Speakers:

Graham Cogley, Professor Emeritus of Geography, Trent University. Professor Cogley will talk about how glaciers and sea ice are affected by climate change. Cogley is a contributing author of Chapter 4 (Observations: Cryosphere) of the Working Group I contribution to the IPCC report and a lead author to Chapter 3 (Freshwater resources) of the Working Group II report.

Howard Freeland, Physical Oceanographer and Emeritus Scientist, Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Freeland will talk about the effects of climate change on oceans and sea level rise. Freeland is a review editor of Chapter 3 (Observations: Oceans) of the Working Group I contribution to the IPCC report.

Xuebin Zhang, Research Scientist at Environment Canada. Zhang will talk about the climate models used to predict future changes. Zhang is a lead author of Chapter 10 (Detection and Attribution of Climate Change: from Global to Regional).

Francis Zwiers, Director of the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium. Professor Zwiers will discuss the IPCC process and the climate models used to make predictions. He is a review editor of Chapter 11 (Near-term Climate Change: Projections and Predictability).
