La datation par l\u2019uranium-plomb de grains de sable (appel\u00e9s zircons et montr\u00e9s dans l\u2019image ci-dessus) provenant des sables bitumineux en Alberta montre que plusieurs de ces grains semblent provenir de roches \u00e9rod\u00e9es de la cha\u00eenes des Appalaches qui traverse l\u2019est de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord et auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9es par des rivi\u00e8res jusqu\u2019en Alberta pendant le Cr\u00e9tac\u00e9 inf\u00e9rieur (il y a entre 100 et 146 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9e).
