(Image credit: Gabriel L\u00edo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A new species of dinosaur seemingly made up of parts from other dinosaurs, similar to the modern day platypus, has been found by seven-year-old Diego Su\u00e1rez in Chile.<\/p>\n<p>The species was named after Su\u00e1rez, <em>Chilesaurus diegosuarezi<\/em>, and belongs to the theropod group of dinosaurs and is closely related to the Tyrannosaurus rex. However the Chilesaurus has a small skull and feet more similar to early long-neck dinosaurs and was herbivorous.<\/p>\n<p>The new species shows that theropods evolved to eat a meat-free diet earlier than previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>When the species was first discovered, it was initially thought several species had been uncovered. However, since the original find, four complete skeletons have been excavated.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Chilesaurus<\/em> is the one of the most extreme instances of convergent evolution, where several species develop similar physical characteristics through different paths.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nature14307.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Original research paper<\/span><\/a>\u00a0published in <em>Nature\u00a0<\/em>on\u00a0<strong>April 27<\/strong><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_453723367\"><span class=\"aQJ\"><strong>, 2015<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Names and affiliations of selected\u00a0authors<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Fernando Novas, Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales \u201cB.
