They were then given a chance to judge and assign punishments for transgressors, criminals and worldview critics. However, some were first reminded of their religious beliefs by a simple question (\u201cwhich religious beliefs system do you identify with?\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Across nine\u00a0different experiments totalling 901 participants, the threat normally caused more punitive reactions, but the religious belief reminder reversed this effect and caused less punitive reactions instead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/journals\/psp\/107\/3\/432\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Original research paper<\/span><\/a>\u00a0published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Personality and Social Psychology<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>September,\u00a02014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Names and affiliations of selected\u00a0authors<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Ian McGregor, York University, Ontario<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study suggests that reminding someone of their religious beliefs could help quell hostile urges.
