The study analyzed the brains of 800 Quebecers and found that a variant of a gene carried by about a quarter of the population is associated with a 50% lower risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s among men, and a 30% lower risk among women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Among patients who do develop Alzheimer\u2019s, the gene variant is also associated with a delay in the onset of symptoms by up to 4 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The gene is called HMG CoA reductase and normally regulates cholesterol production and mobilization in the brain; thus the researchers hope that cholesterol-reducing drugs could help fight Alzheimer\u2019s in patients that don\u2019t carry the mutation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/mp\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/mp201481a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Original research paper<\/a><\/span>\u00a0published in the journal\u00a0<em>Molecular Psychiatry<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em>on\u00a0<strong>July 15, 2014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Names and affiliations of selected\u00a0authors<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Louis De Beaumont,\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec at\u00a0Trois-Rivi\u00e8res, Quebec<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study shows that a particular gene variation is associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s and a delay in the onset of symptoms.
