In the upcoming federal election, health care must be a key issue otherwise Canada’s health care problems will continue, according an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Additionally the editorial calls on federal political parties to articulate clear policy platforms on health care.
The Deputy Editor of the CMAJ, Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, says “the federal government has walked away from collaborating with the provinces through the Council of the Federation and declined to renew the First Ministers’ Accord on Health Care” over the previous decade.
The paper provides several examples of negative action, such as tying research support to business interests rather than health benefits, as well as examples of inaction on the part of the federal government.
