Canadian students excel at science – so why are so few choosing to pursue it? And just how big a problem will that be in tomorrow’s job market?

The report “Spotlight on Science Learning”, commissioned by Amgen Canada and Let’s Talk Science, tackles why Canadian students opt out of science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) subjects. It also looks at why education in these topics is more important than ever for tomorrow’s job market – even jobs that aren’t in labs or academia. The report was designed to set measurable goals in order to track progress on STEM learning in Canada. The report was published on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

The SMCC hosted a webinar launching the report at 11:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, with several of the report’s co-authors. Speakers included:

Bonnie Schmidt, President, Let’s Talk Science
Karen Burke, Director, Regulatory Affairs, Amgen Canada
Catherine Paisley, VP, Science Education at the Ontario Science Centre
Laura Verhoeven, Science teacher, Metchosen Technical School & 2012 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence recipient
