Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

The winners of the 2016 NSERC prizes celebrating exceptional research in Canada were announced yesterday they include:

  • Dr. Victoria M. Kaspi, McGill University, is the winner of the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering. Kapsi studies neutron stars and her research sheds light on how stars evolve and die, and the very nature of matter under extreme conditions.

  • Dr. Barbara Sherwood Lollar, University of Toronto, is the winner of the NSERC John C. Polanyi Award. Lollar, and her colleagues, discovered ancient waters bubbling out of rock fractures in mines more than two kilometers underground in Timmins, Ontario, and South Africa. Their analysis of the billion-year-old water uncovered valuable information about deep chemical processes.

  • Dr. Shana Kelley and Dr. Edward H. Sargent, University of Toronto: The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering for developing a new device that can provide diagnostic test results to a doctor in 20 minutes.

  • Dr J.David Miller, Carleton University: Synergy Award for Innovation for the collaborative research with J.D. Irving to improve the ability of conifers to fight off spruce budworm.
