Data from the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization provides evidence that the 1970s–80s marked a widespread period of major increases in diversity of crops grown in nearly all regions of the world. However, while regional differences in crop species pools persist, a trend towards greater homogeneity in the crops being grown in agricultural lands across regions has also emerged. The trends likely reflect the influence of environmental and socio-economic conditions on crops grown in large-scale, industrial agricultural systems.
