Hormone replacement therapy does not protect post-menopausal women against cardiovascular diseases, an updated meta-analysis shows. Furthermore, hormone therapy does cause a slight increased risk of stroke.

The authors of the study took into account new results from clinical trials that lasted between six months and 10 years, in which 40,000 women (mainly over 60 years old) were involved.

This new analysis agrees with a previous 2012 review, the authors conclude that hormone therapy does remain a valid treatment option for women who are significantly troubled by menopausal symptoms. They advise women considering hormone therapy to discuss the benefits and risks with their physician.
