New statistics about hospitalizations due to intentional injuries in children and youth aged 10 to 17 – including both assault and self-harm – show that self-inflicted injuries have risen significantly in the last five years, especially among girls:

  • Over the past 5 years, the rate of intentional self-harm–related hospitalizations in girls has increased by more than 110%, from 78 to 164 per 100,000 female youths

  • Over the same period, the rate for boys has increased by more than 35%, from 23 to 32 per 100,000 male youths

  • The number of boys hospitalized for intentional assault has decreased by more than 34% since 2009–2010, while the number of girls hospitalized for the same reason has increased by 22%.
